Fluid retention
With the arrival of warmer temperatures and higher humidity, comes the real possibility of fluid retention, specifically in your hands, feet, ankles, face and abdomen.
We have twice as much lymphatic fluid as blood, and there is no pump in the lymphatic system. It's easier to become dehydrated in the heat, so our body will try to retain the fluid that is there, reducing the amount of salt in our sweat.
A course of lymphatic drainage sessions in the warmer months can help you to manage the discomfort of increased fluid retention by manually moving the fluid around the body, relieving distention that comes from bloating, whilst also boosting your immune health.
Other ways to help your lymphatic system in the heat and humidity:
- stay hydrated and consider incorporating electrolytes, such as Basica, which provides an optimal level of hydration
- avoid consuming excessive salt, caffeine and alcohol
- wear loose and comfortable clothing made of natural fibres, like linen and cotton
- keep cool and incorporate some movement into your daily routine if possible
- include deep belly breathing as part of your self care for nervous system and lymphatic health
- pop your feet up against a wall if you notice swelling in your lower limbs
Wishing you peace and presence in your day,
Michelle Sacchetti
