The first principle of Reiki - Just for today, do not be angry

Knowing your triggers and understanding how and where anger presents in your body can put you in the driver’s seat in being able to preempt the emotions and be measured in you response. There is no right or wrong way, but the way that works for you.

ABOUT REIKI

Reiki is a gentle, yet effective energy therapy that can assist one to calm the body and mind, by fostering a deep sense of relaxation and interpersonal connection. It can be beneficial to foster some down time, which may be helpful to find equilibrium in the more demanding times of life.

THE FIRST PRINCIPLE OF REIKI
JUST FOR TODAY, DO NOT BE ANGRY

Anger is an emotion, just like any other, but often has a bad reputation, not because of the emotion itself, but because of the way it is sometimes expressed. Red, hot, seething words and behaviours can be displayed, which may later lead to regret and the fragmentation of relationships and therefore ourselves.

WHY DO WE ANGER?

Anger often comes about when we feel our boundaries have become violated or disrespected in some way. So how can we go about expressing anger in a way that is productive, rather than destructive? Some things you may wish to consider include:

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS SITUATION THAT SPECIFICALLY TRIGGERS YOUR ANGER?

Perhaps the situation reminds you of a time when you were not able to have your voice heard, or you were not in a position to express that your boundaries had been violated? You may wish to become curious about what this situation reminds you of, was there a time in the past where you felt similar to this? This may bring about the recognition of a pattern, therefore creating awareness to understand your triggers. A clear sense of where your boundaries start and end may also be helpful in being able to ascertain your sense of self, and why you have been triggered.

CREATING SPACE AS A BUFFER

Count to ten and gain some perspective on the situation before you act, or if you can, sleep on it. This could also provide the ability to view the events that occurred from a distance, taking the fully charged emotions out of the situation. This can provide some perspective, whilst also avoiding regret about things said or done in the heat of the moment that could be hard to take back at a later stage.

WHAT DOES ANGER LOOK LIKE OR FEEL LIKE FOR YOU?

The ability to express this is not always easy, but tools such as being able to notice where anger sits in your body and having a sense of it, can be helpful in then being able to connect to it to facilitate its expression, rather than being overwhelmed by an unexpected eruption of emotion.

ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH HOW YOU EXPRESS YOUR ANGER?

Are you one to hold on to your anger, being uncomfortable about expressing it, therefore allowing it to accumulate and erupt at a later date? Do you hold onto your anger, allowing for resentment to fester? Or are you one that has a fiery temper and is quick to anger? Perhaps you are able to find a happy medium and are measured in how you assert yourself should the situation arise. Holding onto anger can be like carrying excess baggage, not leaving much room for other things to flourish. Forgiveness can be a liberating experience, creating a sense f serenity and space for the new to emerge.

Knowing your triggers and understanding how and where anger presents in your body can put you in the driver’s seat in being able to preempt the emotions and be measured in you response. There is no right or wrong way, but the way that works for you. We are masterpieces in the making after all.
